Initiative to improve Communication with College Parents

In an endeavour to improve communication between the College and parents, the School Communicator tool (which is used very effectively in the Prep and Pre-prep) is being relaunched. Please see this letter:

regarding the steps you need to take to use this communication tool easily and effectively. College staff have been briefed on the tool, and will be using it to give you regular, current and useful information on all aspects of College life.

Should you already be using Communicator, please note that we have introduced a new channel – College Academics. Please go to your Personalise tab on Communicator, and tick this new channel to ensure you receive news and information pertaining to the academic programme in the College.

Upper V Job Shadowing

Dear UV Parents,

The last three days of the term are devoted to the UV Job Shadowing Project. Other than being vital experiential learning and a good check for the boys to see if the courses they anticipate doing at university will take them into a suitable career field, forms one of the UV LO portfolio tasks.

I have asked all boys to bring me written confirmation from the company/companies they intend visiting during their job shadowing. I would appreciate your assistance in seeing that your sons access appropriate work experiences. Should any parents be able to accommodate boys in their own companies I would appreciate it if you could let me know a.s.a.p. Several boys have limited contacts and will need assistance in sourcing suitable firms to visit.

Kind regards
Anne Nettleton

CANSA Relay for Life

Many of you will be aware that a 12-hour CANSA Relay for Life event will be co-hosted by St John’s and St Mary’s on Burger field from 19:00 on Saturday 3rd March to 07:00 on Sunday 4th March. Imagine On The Night without the fireworks, but with tents all around the field in a mass campout and participants walking around a track to raise funds for CANSA. Information regarding this event can be found on our School Communicator and hard copies of information packs containing important information were distributed to the boys last week.

Although the event is still a month away, logistics demands that the cutoff date for entries is this Wednesday (1st February). Please do dig around in your son’s bag for this, get excited about participating, create a team of between 5 and 15 people and get your entries to us by Wednesday!

Indoor Cricket Centre

We at St John’s College are excited about a new project that will see the building of an Indoor Cricket Centre. The new Indoor Cricket Centre will be situated between Rice and Mitchell Fields. It is anticipated that this project will commence within the next month and will be completed by April 2012.

The new facility will be used by Pre-Prep, Prep and College boys to develop an even higher standard of cricket at St John’s College. It will consist of four lanes and will be built according to international specifications. We have ensured that the façade of the building will blend in with the aesthetics of the school.

The cost of the project has been estimated at just under R6million. This budgeted amount will enable us to build the indoor nets and an outside area that will include a tea shelter, a paved seating area and toilets. Please refer to the artist’s impression attached.

We have already secured funding commitments totaling R4million, which leaves a total of R1.9million to be raised. We will be undertaking a number of fundraising drives throughout the year to raise the balance of the funding needed to complete this facility. We will be appealing to the cricket parents and other members of the St John’s community to consider contributing to this project.

All contributions will be acknowledged on an Acknowledgement Board to be housed within the facility. Donors would also be able to specify if they would like to sponsor a particular item in the building project.

If you would like to learn more about this project, please contact one of the following people:

  • Rob Long
  • Adrian Norris
  • Craig Verdal-Austin

If you would like more information about making a contribution, please contact Heather Cooper at the St John’s Foundation on 011-645-3075, 082-823-2744 or cooper at stjohnscollege.co.za. All donations will qualify for deductions from taxable income in accordance with the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962.

We look forward to your participation in the funding of this exciting project.
